REDCLIFF, AB – The Redcliff Youth Centre scored big this week, netting a grant of $10,200 from the Calgary Flames Foundation.

The centre’s executive director Janae Ulrich is overwhelmed by the grant.

“In the last few years, we’ve come a really long way in regards to maintaining our capability and our sustainability in the community for our youth. The interior and exterior received a pretty dramatic facelift which has been wonderful,” she says. “But the contents within the building have definitely been very worn over the years so to be able to receive a grant like this is so impactful not only for the staff but especially for all of our attending youth.”

She says there are currently 298 youth registered at the RYC.

The centre was able to replace some physical programming supplies with a previous grant from the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta, and this new grant will let them do more.

“It gives us additional funding for transportation to be able to take the kids on field trips throughout the province or the community. It will be able to increase the supplies of outdoor activities as well,” Ulrich says.

“With our renovations we were able to put in a little basketball area, and a volleyball area as well so to be able to replace all the equipment that again is very utilized.”

Money will also go to replacing art supplies and bringing in people to teach the kids about arts and culture or other various resources in the community.

Volunteer Appreciation Dinner

As well, the Redcliff Youth Centre hosted a volunteer appreciation dinner at the Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub on Thursday.

Twelve members of the centre served meals to more than 50 community volunteers.

“We partner very closely with the Root Cellar they provide a lot of the supplies and materials for our dinner program and healthy snack program that feeds over a hundred kids a week usually, two of our very busiest programs,” Ulrich said. “So to be able to go there last night and give back to the community was really enriching and kind of emotional as well for a lot of our youth to be able to give back in a way.”
