Medicine Hat man should face more hate crime charges, says human rights group

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A national human rights group is calling for a new round of hate crime charges to be laid against Loki Hulgaard, above and beyond the latest charges the Medicine Hat man is facing.

Last July, Hulgaard was charged with breaching his conditional sentence after a large amount of hate materials were discovered online.

Jewish human rights group B’nai Brith Canada says the materials were among the worst anti-Semitic hate literature they’ve ever seen, and the group is calling for Hulgaard to face additional charges.

“This individual’s original charges involve wilful promotion of hatred and if he’s responsible for these publications then he should face the same charges again,” B’nai Brith Canada’s Michal Schlesinger told CHAT News.

Hulgaard was convicted in 2020 after pleading guilty to passing currency with anti-Semitic slogans.

He has pleaded not guilty to breaching his conditional sentence and faces an upcoming trial.

In a statement to CHAT News, Medicine Hat Police Service mentioned that Hulgaard faced a hate related charge in 2018, but didn’t comment on why another hate-related charge wasn’t laid in the latest case against him.
