Guilty plea for man charged with promoting hatred

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A Medicine Hat man facing hate crime and firearms charges has entered guilty pleas to two charges.

Loki Hulgaard pleaded guilty to one count of wilful promotion of hatred and one count of of contravening conditions of his firearms licence on February 26 in provincial court.

Hulgaard, 36, was arrested in August 2018 after passing money branded with anti-Semitic messages at a Medicine Hat business.

Police later executed a search warrant at Hulgaard’s home, seizing numerous computers, USB drives and hate stickers. Officers also seized four firearms at the time of the arrest, including two SKS rifles which allegedly had their serial numbers filed off.

Hulgaard returns to court on March 26, where a sentencing date is expected to be set.

A charge of wilful promotion of hatred carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison, according to the Criminal Code of Canada.
