Local MLA weighs in on Restriction Exemption Program, caucus calls for premier’s resignation

Feb 4, 2022 | 5:02 PM

Following anger reported within the United Conservative Party caucus over COVID-19 measures, Brooks-Medicine Hat MLA Michaela Frey is calling for unity among fellow UCP MLAs.

Alberta’s environment minister was one of a dozen UCP MLAs who called this week for an end to the Restrictions Exemptions Program.

As well, there are reports Bonnyville-Cold Lake-St. Paul MLA David Hanson is upset with delays to the program’s cancellation, and as a result, is calling for Premier Jason Kenney’s resignation.

Frey also wants the REP to end immediately, but she says there’s no place for infighting among government members.

“The United Conservative Party is a grassroots party that has the leadership decided by its members, not by caucus,” Frey told CHAT News, adding, “I respect the rights of our members to be able to vote on leadership, which is why, y’know, I encourage people who have concerns to go to the (UCP) leadership review on April 9. That’s the way to do this and that’s the way I’m going to do it.”

Frey wouldn’t comment on how she plans to cast her vote during the leadership review.
