Big Marble Go Centre becomes more energy efficient

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Big Marble Go Centre announced on Thursday it has installed a new cogeneration unit.

This is the second cogeneration unit to be installed at the facility. The previous unit did not work out for various reasons but Daniel Barbour, a project manager and engineer with the City of Medicine Hat, says the new unit is updated and much more reliable.

He came into the project about a year ago and says he’s excited about the cogeneration unit after seeing how effective it can be.

“There was a private group that just installed a very similar unit in the city as well and we’ve had some good reports from that. So I’m personally optimistic that we may be able to further utilize cogeneration in other facilities.”

A cogeneration unit sends electricity where it is needed but uses the excess heat to warm the building and water.

In some cases, this could be twice as efficient as conventional power stations while helping to reduce emissions and lower energy costs.

The installation is a result of the partnership between the City of Medicine Hat and the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre.

The grant program by the Alberta government aims to assist municipalities in pushing towards green fuel and sustainable infrastructure.
