Monthly electricity cost still double the fixed-rate; price of natural gas rises

The electricity rate for City of Medicine Hat utility customers sits above 16 cents per kilowatt hour for the second straight month, more than double the fixed-rate for 2022.

The natural gas rate has increased and is also higher than the fixed-rate.

The monthly rates were posted by the city on Tuesday.

Electricity customers will pay 16.183 cents per kilowatt-hour this month, down slightly from 16.194 per kilowatt-hour in January.

The fixed-rate offered by the city is 8 cents per kilowatt-hour for 2022.

The natural gas rate has been set at $5.051 per gigajoule, up from $3.646 in January.

The fixed-rate for 2022 is $4.35 per GJ, as of Jan. 1.

The monthly rates are determined based on the average set by other providers in the province.

The natural gas price is in the middle of the $5.295 set by Apex (formerly AltaGas) and the $4.842 set by Direct Energy.

The electricity price falls between the high of 15.681 cents set by Epcor (outside Edmonton) and the 16.557 cents set by Direct Energy.
