MEDICINE HAT, AB – Beckett Langkow’s standout performance in relief gave the Medicine Hat Tigers a shot on Sunday night.

However, the Red Deer Rebels were able to trounce the Tigers 5-2 at Co-Op Place to keep the black and orange winless over the course of a three-game weekend.

Red Deer torched the Tigers for three goals on their first seven shots of the game, before facing Langkow in relief of starter Garin Bjorklund.

Langkow came up big with a 32-save performance, but the Tigers comeback attempt stalled in the third period for the second straight game.

The Rebels’ quick start came 5:19 into the game as Kalan Lind found defender Hunter Mayo at the point, who fired home his first career WHL goal to give the visitors the early 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, it was Liam Keeler playing in his 250th career WHL game flying down the wing and sniping his 11th of the season clean past Bjorklund to put Red Deer up by two.

Near the midway point of the first, the Rebels extended their lead to 3-0 on a 4-on-3 power play opportunity with Finnish import Christoffer Sedoff wiring home a one-timer to chase Bjorklund from his crease.

Langkow was able to keep Medicine Hat in the game well into the second period with some big stops, before Teague Patton picked up a Daniel Baker rebound 5:34 into the frame to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Just 34 seconds after Patton’s goal a face-off win by Oasiz Wiesblatt found Pavel Bocharov, who slid it cross-ice to Brendan Lee for the one-timer to get the Tigers back into the game.

Red Deer’s 3-2 lead was extended four minutes into the third period however, as Arshdeep Bains found a seem five-hole on Langkow for his 17th goal of the season to provide a bit of insurance.

Ben King meanwhile netted his third point of the night, a goal with 6:42 remaining, to plunge the dagger into Medicine Hat’s comeback hopes to preserve the win 5-2.

Medicine Hat was outshot 41-21 on Sunday evening, with Connor Ungar making 19 stops to pick up the victory for the visitors.

Going winless over their three-game weekend set, the 7-24-3-1 Tigers are off until Friday night when they kick start a short road swing through Saskatchewan beginning with the Saskatoon Blades.
