MEDICINE HAT, AB – The City of Medicine Hat is offering rebates of between $100 and $10,000 under the 2022 Hat Smart Residential Incentive Program.

This year’s program has four separate incentives – Existing Homes, New Homes, Scratch and Win and Home Evaluations.

Homeowners should be particularly interested in the Home Evaluation incentive, says Jaret Dickie with the City of Medicine Hat.

Hat Smart will pay up to $400 towards an evaluation and the city is asking people to have a pre-audit done.

“I think it’s a really exciting opportunity for homeowners to identify ‘OK where’s my best bang for my buck as far as investment ot help me save on my utility bill,” he says. “As you are aware and customers are aware the price of energy has increased significantly over the last year and some customers are trying to do everything they can to save in those areas.”

Under the Existing Homes incentive, homeowners can be rebated up to $5,000 for eligible retrofits such as home insulation, windows and doors, air conditioners, furnaces and more.

Dickie says that as in past years money can be reserved for various elements once a pre-audit is complete.

Construction of more energy efficient homes is the goal of the New Homes incentive.

The city says reducing a home’s energy consumption by just 10 gigajoules per year can lead to energy savings of about $3,000. Rebates of up to $10,000 are available.

For Scratch & Win, residents can apply twice this year recover $100 on the cost of small ticket energy items such as energy efficient lightbulbs and programmable thermostats.

Dickie says this year’s program was developed through a collaborative approach.

They sought to complement what was being offered by other levels of government, used feedback from customers and spoke with local energy advisors about what sort of renovations people are doing.

Hat Smart is funded through a levy charged to residential utility customers. For more information on Hat Smart visit the city’s website.
