Tongue on the Post goes online for another year

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Organizers of Tongue on the Post are looking on the bright side as they prepare for another virtual folk music festival this month.

The 2021 edition moved online due to public health restrictions surrounding COVID-19 and attracted viewers in Panama, England and Australia, among other countries.

That made it easier for organizers to take the tough decision to go online again this year.

“Knowing that we reached the number of people that we did last year, you know over 85,000 people, we realized that it was definitely an effective way to do it,” says Rob Pape, executive director of the Medicine Hat Folk Music Club. “We wanted to be able to have people in-person but it’s just not feasible for the safety of our community and our members. So to pivot to livestream has been a nice option to be able to help get the message out, to get these musicians out in front of people.”

The festival runs Jan. 24-29 and all performances will be presented from inside one of Medalta’s brick beehive kilns.

They’ll be available on the Folk Music Club’s Facebook and YouTube pages and on the club’s own website on a pay-what-you-will basis.

Former Hatter and Folk Music Club alumnus Phyllis Sinclair headlines the festival’s final night.

Pape says was an integral part of the folk music club in its early years, including starting singer-songwriter night, and found success last year with her album and single Ghost Bones.

“Her song Ghost Bones sat No. 1 for 18 weeks on the Indigenous charts and she had three songs Top 10 last year off of that album,” Pape says.

There will be three acts on Friday and Saturday night and two per day on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

More details on the festival are available on the club’s website and Facebook page.
