Medicine Hat police arrest two for firearms charges on New Year’s Day
MEDICINE HAT, AB – The new year began with an arrest for two visitors to our city.
On Jan. 1 at about 3:30 p.m. in the Flats neighbourhood a Medicine Hat Police Service patrol officer stopped a motorist who was driving while prohibited. Police say that a search of the vehicle uncovered a loaded 9mm handgun, a collapsible baton, bear spray, a stolen credit card and several other government identity documents that were not in the name of the driver or his passenger.
Two men, a 38-year-old from Calgary and a 33-year-old from North Battleford, Sask., have been charged with numerous firearms offences, illegal weapon offences, possession of a stolen credit card, illegal possession of identification documents and breaching of court-imposed conditions. The Calgary man was also charged with driving while prohibited.
Both have had bail hearings. The Calgary man is awaiting his next court date of Jan. 5, while the North Battleford man was eligible for release from custody on $150 cash bail and is scheduled to appear in court next on Jan. 13.
