MEDICINE HAT, AB – The new year began on a sour note for the Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday night, humbled on home ice against the CHL’s best.

The Winnipeg ICE scored three times in the second period at Co-Op Place, skating to a 6-1 trouncing of the Tigers.

It came just two days after Medicine Hat played arguably their best game of the season to this point with a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Hitmen, while they played a shorthanded Winnipeg club on defence.

Despite being double-shifted much of the night, ICE defenceman Nolan Orzeck ran hot with a goal and four points to help Winnipeg to the win.

Winnipeg’s Connor McLennon opened the game with a goal off a Tigers turnover three minutes into the contest, before adding his second of the game in the second off a Jack Finley pass.

That goal opened the floodgates for Winnipeg with goals from Alessandro Segafredo and Zachary Benson before the end of the second staked the ICE to a 4-0 lead through 40 minutes.

Finley found the back of the net 16 seconds into the third converting on a pass by Orzeck, while Orzeck sprung on a breakaway beat Beckett Langkow under the arm.

Tigers defender Reid Andresen broke Gage Alexander’s shutout bid in the final three minutes with a wrist shot from the slot for his third of the season, a highlight for Medicine Hat on an otherwise tough evening.

Langkow suffered his eighth straight loss between the pipes with six goals allowed on 27 shots against, while Alexander stopped 27 of 28 that came his way.

It’s a lightning quick turnaround for the Tabbies, as they hit the road for Calgary on Sunday morning for a matinee tilt against the Hitmen at 1:00 pm at Scotiabank Saddledome.
