LETHBRIDGE — Winter storm watches are posted along the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in southwestern Alberta, including as far east as Taber.

Wind gusting over 100 kilometres per hour are expected to create near zero visibility in blowing snow for southwestern Alberta tomorrow, with blizzard conditions by Saturday evening.

Conditions are forecast to subside early Sunday morning, but the winds will remain until Sunday night.
People are being advised to avoid travel in those areas if possible.

Here’s the full warning from Environment Canada.

Blizzard conditions are expected Saturday.

Saturday morning strong west winds with gusts exceeding 100 km/h are expected to create near zero visibility in blowing snow along the southern foothills. Throughout the day Saturday the strong winds will spread eastward bringing blizzard conditions to Lethbridge by Saturday evening.

Blizzard conditions are forecast to subside early Sunday morning as the temperature rises to near zero.

Strong west winds with gusts near 100 km/h will continue through the day Sunday before subsiding Sunday night.

Avoid travel if possible. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations.

If you must travel, keep others informed of your schedule and destination and carry an emergency kit and mobile phone.

Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.
