More turbulent B.C. weather after rare twister sighting

Nov 7, 2021 | 2:09 PM

Turbulent weather is expected for the Vancouver, B.C. area Sunday after a tornado was spotted in the region for the first time in decades.

Environment Canada’s Sunday forecast included a risk of a thunderstorm for Vancouver, which is also a rare weather phenomenon in that area, and winds were expected to again reach gusting levels.

The tornado was spotted over the Strait of Georgia Saturday, with some witnesses saying it came ashore and caused some minor tree damage at the University of British Columbia and surrounding area.

According to the Northern Tornadoes Project, the last time there was a tornado in Metro Vancouver was in 1991 in the municipality of Pitt Meadows.

“Also, note that all tornadoes (in Metro Vancouver) have been March-July. Nothing even close to November,” the project tweeted.
