Tigers drop fourth game in a row, falling 3-2 in Swift Current

SWIFT CURRENT, SK – From breakaways to rebounds, the Medicine Hat Tigers had their chances on Friday night.

But for the fourth straight game, they came up just short falling 3-2 to the Broncos in Swift Current.

Broncos star sophomore Mathew Ward scored 55 seconds into the third period to give his team the lead, a lead which would stand for the remainder of the night despite a late Tigers comeback attempt.

Midway through the first period, Medicine Hat suffered arguably their biggest loss of the night as top-line winger Noah Danielson was hit with a knee-on-knee collision with Swift Current’s Josh Davies.

Davies was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for kneeing, however the Tigers were unable to capitalize on the extended power play while Danielson did not return.

Minutes after the Tigers’ lengthy man advantage ran out, the Broncos took their first lead of the night with Raphael Pelletier setting up Josh Filmon in the slot for his fourth goal of the season.

Medicine Hat was quick to respond however, with veteran Corson Hopwo stealing the puck at his own blueline and sniping on a breakaway to tie up the contest at 1-1.

The next goal wouldn’t come until early in the third, when Ward let a shot go from the point on the power play which worked its way through traffic for the go-ahead marker.

Garin Bjorklund skated to the bench with a couple minutes left in regulation for the extra skater, but Medicine Hat product Caleb Wyrostok would beat out Bogdans Hodass in a sprint in the Tigers zone to score on the empty net.

An Owen MacNeil rebound goal late made it interesting for the Tigers to cut the deficit to 3-2, but the Broncos would hang on to break their own 10-game losing streak on Friday.

Swift Current has taken three out of four meetings against the Tabbies to begin the season, while Bjorklund’s record dropped to 2-5-1-0 despite making 20 saves on 22 shots.

Isaac Poulter continued his strong play against Medicine Hat in the Broncos net, allowing just two goals on 31 shots against to up his save percentage in games against the Tigers this year to .951.

Medicine Hat will have another shot at breaking the slide on Saturday night at home, hosting the Moose Jaw Warriors at 7:00 pm.
