Yukon government employees must get first vaccine dose by Nov. 30

WHITEHORSE — Yukon’s premier has announced a vaccine mandate for government employees including front-line workers in the health-care system and teachers, but the territory has not yet determined any consequences for those who refuse to comply.

Sandy Silver says employees must get their first vaccine dose by Nov. 30 and be fully vaccinated by Jan. 30.

Cabinet will meet this week to discuss other details, including whether anyone would be placed on unpaid leave for not meeting the initial deadline.

Silver says the government has been discussing the vaccine mandate with unions, but there won’t be any alternatives like COVID-19 tests on the job for anyone who is not vaccinated.

Yukon will also introduce a proof-of-vaccination card based on British Columbia’s model for those aged 12 and up to access non-essential services.

Silver says the territory is finalizing the list of where it must be presented.

Chief medical health officer Dr. Christine Elliott says the territory recorded 182 new cases of the virus in the first 29 days of October, representing an increase of 125 per cent from the previous month.
