MEDICINE HAT, AB – Art and Design students at Medicine Hat College took the unforeseen and turned it into something that has to be seen.

The exhibition currently on display the One on One Gallery in the Cultural Centre is called The Unforeseen.

“We kind of derived it from the COVID pandemic situation and how no one really saw it coming and everything was unforeseen, still is technically,” explained Visual Arts Student Society president Peyton Erickson. “So we really wanted to see what people would play with with that.”

The group combined the pandemic idea with Halloween.

“Whatever you don’t see coming it can be scary no matter what that might be. So a lot of people interpreted it differently,” Erickson continued.

“A lot of people took a humorous approach to it like something funny that you wouldn’t normally see, or something scary that you wouldn’t see coming or there’s also a lot of colours that you would not normally see which is really nice not every stuck with a very scary theme a lot of people went in different directions which was really nice to see.”

The Unforeseen features 41 works of art from first- to fourth-year art and design students in a variety of mediums. Erickson says the craftsmanship and technical skill shown in the pieces is “amazing.”

A reception for The Unforeseen takes place Friday at 7 p.m. Erickson said the gallery will be decorated, there will be cool lighting effects and people will be in costumes. Proof of vaccination is needed to enter.

The exhibition is up until Nov. 1.

Erickson welcomes any Art and Design student at the college to join the Visual Arts Student Society. She the society is always open to ideas and suggestions to improve the society.
