City adding Hockey Hounds arena to Restrictions Exemption Program

Oct 26, 2021 | 3:15 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Hockey Hounds Recreation Centre will soon be added to the list of city facilities employing the provincial Restrictions Exemption Program (REP).

As of Monday, Nov. 1 people will be subject to screening in order to enter the building.

The City of Medicine Hat implemented the REP at other facilities over the past five weeks. The program has been in place at Co-op Place since Sept. 23, the Esplanade since Sept. 28, and the Family Leisure Centre and Kinplex since Oct. 1.

“The Hockey Hounds arena had a smaller number of user groups and we wanted to evaluate the feasibility of operating with the one-third capacity instead of requiring the proof of vaccine,” said Brian Mastel, managing director of public services said in a release. “It soon became clear that the patrons and users at the Hockey Hounds expected the same level of service that the REP provides at other facilities. By implementing the REP we will be able to alleviate spectator capacity restrictions and resume adult group activities in the facility.”

Anyone 12 years of age and older, not entering the facility as part of a youth sports organization, will be required to show one of the following:

  • Proof of double COVID-19 vaccination (required as of Oct. 25)
    • After Nov. 15, proof of vaccination must be provided using valid QR code issued by Alberta Health
  • Proof of a privately-paid negative PCR or rapid test no more than 72 hours before entry
  • An original (non-copied) valid medical exemption letter

Those 18 years and older must also show ID with your name and birthdate.

Full details, including answers to frequently asked questions about the REP, are available at medicinehat.ca/covid19.

Mandatory masking requirements and physical distancing remain in place at all city facilities, as per the provincial public health orders.

The city says other public facilities not implementing the REP at this time will continue to follow Alberta Health restrictions, including reduced occupancy and programming adjustments.
