Tigers third period surge snuffed out by Oil Kings in Saturday loss

EDMONTON, AB – The goals came fast and swift in the third period for the Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday night, unfortunately it was one goal too few.

Medicine Hat’s third period comeback attempt against the Edmonton Oil Kings came up just short at Rogers Place, losing by a 5-4 score to see their two-game win streak snapped.

The Tigers fell behind early against the Oil Kings, who pressured the visiting Tabbies with a pile of shot attempts that was finished off by a Carson Latimer tip in front of the net 2:29 into the game.

Despite trailing heavily in shots over the first, Medicine Hat was able to tie up the game on the power play with Ashton Ferster deflecting a Noah Danielson shot for the first goal of his WHL career late in the frame.

Edmonton’s attack broke through one more time before the first intermission however, as Jacob Boucher redirected a point shot from Ethan Peters past Tigers goalie Garin Bjorklund with only 35 seconds left before the break.

That 2-1 lead was extended to 3-1 in the opening minute of the second, with newly acquired Oil Kings defenceman Luke Prokop firing the puck from just above the goal line and picking a spot top shelf on Bjorklund for the unlikely goal.

Latimer netted his second goal of the evening five minutes into the third frame off a scramble at the side of the net to give the Ottawa Senators prospect and the home side a three-goal advantage.

Two minutes after that, Lukas Svejkovsky finally got the Tigers back into the game off a shot from Daniel Baker to cut the deficit to a pair.

Medicine Hat’s picture-perfect power play finally cracked shortly after the Svejkovsky marker though, as Arizona Coyotes first rounder Dylan Guenther went bar-down for his third of the season to put Edmonton in front 5-3.

The Tigers made a game of it late, first with a seeing-eye shot from the point by Dru Krebs for his first of the year near the midway point of the third.

That was followed up by Corson Hopwo netting his third goal in three games with a spin around backhand to pull Medicine Hat within a single goal with under five minutes to play.

With Bjorklund on the bench the Tigers attacked late, but the clock ran out on their quest for the three-game sweep this week.

Bjorklund was peppered with 40 shots on Saturday making 35 saves, while Kolby Hay recorded his first WHL win in his first WHL start for Edmonton with 18 stops.

The Tigers will be back on the ice next Friday in Moose Jaw looking to improve on their 4-4-0-1 record, puck drop against the Warriors is set for 7:00 pm.
