Election results from southeastern Alberta

New mayors were elected in many Alberta communities but Redcliff is not among them.

Dwight Kilpatrick was re-elected, finishing with 656 votes. Shawna Gale, a councillor last term, placed second with 363 votes, followed by former mayor Ernie Reimer at 238 and Mark Payne at 105.

Four councillors were also returned by Redcliff voters.

Chris Czember topped the polls with 956 votes, followed by Cathy Crozier (767), Jim J. Steinke (738) and Larry Leipert (706). Matthew St. Pierre (701 votes) and James K. Allen (565) fill the final two seats.

In Cypress County, seven wards had elections and three were acclaimed.

In Ward 2 Blaine Brost has been declared the winner with 123 votes. He’s followed by Matthew Cole with 109 votes and Dustin Jones with 74. In Ward 3 Lloyd Want is the winner with 74 votes defeating incumbent Ernest Mudie with 44 votes.

Robin Kurpjuweit remains the councillor for Ward 4 after getting 159 votes Gary Lentz’s 95 votes. Reeve Dan Hamilton also remains the representative for Ward 5 with 202 votes to Della Burkitt’s 161.

For Ward 6, Dustin Vossler has been declared the winner with 193 votes. Travis Tubman had 71 votes. In Ward 7, current deputy reeve Richard Oster got 213 votes, beating out Garry Proctor, who had 144 votes.

Michelle McKenzie was acclaimed in Ward 1, Shane Hok in Ward 8 and Alf Belyea in Ward 9. A byelection will be held for Ward 9 after Belyea was found dead over the weekend.

There was only one election in the County of 40 Mile.

In Division 6, Don Drake received 80 votes to defeat incumbent Chantel Timmons, who got 57 votes.

Incumbents Joan Hughson (Division 1), Diane Harty (Division 2), Stacey Barrows (Division 3) and Craig Widmer (Division 4) were all acclaimed, as was Al Kuizenga in Division 5. The county says a byelection will be held in the near future for Division 7, which remains vacant.

There was only one contest on the Prairie Rose school board, with voters electing Pam Cursons and Shauna Vander Spruit to represent Ward 3 in Redcliff and Dunmore.

Bow Island, Foremost, Brooks and Taber

There was no election in Bow Island. Mayor Gordon Reynolds and councillors Roberto Ficiur, Terrie Matz, Dave Harrison, Denise Curliss, Kim Mitchell and Shannon Strom were elected by acclimation.

In the Village of Foremost, the following five people will form council: Bruce Hillis, Blake Klatt, Lorne Buis, Larry Robinson and Tyson Ormann. Hillis is a newcomer to council, the rest are incumbents. Stewart Payne lost his bid for re-election.

In Brooks, John Petrie earned 1,580 votes to Norman Gerestein’s 1,162 in the mayoral race. Both were councillors last term. John Nesbitt (1,367), Joel Goodnough (1,336), Marissa Wardrop (1,213), Mohammed Idriss (1,150), Bill Prentice (1,146) and Ray Juska (1,117) were elected to council. Jim Third finished close behind with 1,113 votes.

Incumbent Andrew Prokop was elected mayor in Taber. He earned 1,058 votes to Ken Holtz’s 944. The six councillor candidates with the highest vote totals were Joanne Sorensen (1,058 votes), Carly Firth (980), Alf Rudd (959), Garth Bekkering (849), Monica McLean (770) and Jack Brewin (749).

None of the results are official until Oct. 22 at noon.
