Grass fires and finding stone features

Archaeological presentation to focus on stone features along Milk River

Oct 19, 2021 | 3:50 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Members of the South Eastern Alberta Archaeological Society will virtually welcome a district archaeologist for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management for a presentation about stone features found at sites along the Big Bend of the Milk River in Montana.

The sites contain evidence of bison kills and ceremonial and habitation sites. One site in particular is characterized by unique stone features and multiple occupation episodes.

The host group says the stone features, which provide insights into the ways of life on the North American Great Plains centuries ago, are often uncovered by grass fires.

Presenter Josh Chase has worked for the Bureau of Land Management since 2010. He’s based in Havre, Mont. and has worked across north and central Montana developing extensive experience studying and interpreting prehistoric sites.

Chase’s presentation will follow the society’s meeting on Oct. 20. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. with Chase’s presentation at 8 p.m. Members will automatically be linked to the presentation. Non-members must register, at no charge by contacting R.B. Shepard at 403-527-5440 or shepardb@telus.net.
