‘Go Tigers go’: fans thrilled to be back cheering in person

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It was 570 days since the Medicine Hat Tigers heard their hometown crowd.

Goalie Garin Bjorklund called it amazing.

“Just to be back, Saturday night in the ‘coop,’ I mean it’s pretty exciting to have the fans back and seeing orange stands and everyone with the jerseys on and yelling,” Bjorklund said.

While the game may have ended in a 3-2 loss to the Swift Current Broncos, there were smiles all over Co-op Place. It was the Tigers’ first regular season home crowd since the start of the pandemic.

Including one man who’s been a Tigers fan for 30 years.

“These guys are amazing out here and are going to go far. I really appreciate the fans being here for the guys and rock on Tigers.”

As part of WHL protocols last season, fans were shut out from attending games. While the game may not have gone the way the home team wanted, dome fans are looking to make up for lost time.

“Last year I watched all of them at home.”

Friends and family of the Tigers were also let in for the first time, including supporters driving down from Calgary to watch sophomore Carlin Dezainde.

“Cheers to you buddy. Have a good game.”

When the rink erupted into chants for the first time in 19 months, some of the team’s youngest fans made sure to join in.

“Go Tigers go.”

The return of orange and black in the stands was noticed on the bench. Head coach Willie Desjardins says it was so good to see.

“For the fans, it’s a great city, we appreciate them but we have to get better as a team,” Desjardins said.

In just five days, the Tigers have another chance to secure their first win at home against Edmonton.
