MEDICINE HAT, AB – A landmark building in the River Flats that was devastated by the 2013 flood had its moment in the sun today.

The official unveiling of a plaque designating the Mckenzie Sharland Grocery municipal historic resource took place this afternoon.

The grocery, located at 1113 Dominion St. SE, was built in 1912 and was designated as a municipal historic resource on March 4, 2014.

In a release, the City of Medicine Hat says the grocery is valued as a reflection of the surge of development that occurred in the neighbourhood due to its proximity to the thriving local clay, milling, glassware and greenhouse industries.

The city was working on the process of designating the site as a municipal historic resource prior to the 2013 flood. The building and others in the area suffered considerable damage in the flood. The city took over the property and chose to repair the foundation instead of demolishing the building.

The city sold it and in 2016 Cube Development took on the task of restoring the historic property. It serves as a unique feature of McKenzie Mews, a small pocket of homes at the corner of Dominion Street and Washington Avenue.
