Charges laid in Red Deer officer-involved shooting

Red Deer RCMP have now laid charges in relation to the Sept. 21 officer-involved shooting incident that took place at a residence in the area of Maxwell Avenue in Red Deer.

Scott Bruno, 29, of Red Deer, is charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, enter dwelling house without lawful excuse and commit indictable offence, and fail to comply with probation.

Following a judicial hearing on Sept. 22, Bruno was released on cash bail; however, was remanded pending payment of bail. He is scheduled to attend Red Deer provincial court on Sept. 24.

As this matter is now before the courts, no further details will be provided by RCMP.

On Sept. 21, at 6:08 p.m., Red Deer RCMP received a 911 call of a break and enter in progress by an individual known to the homeowner, at a residence in the area of Maxwell Avenue in Red Deer.

Officers responded to the residence and located the male suspect. A confrontation then occurred between the suspect and officers, during which an officer discharged their service weapon, resulting in injury to the man.

Following a search of the residence, officers located the male who was taken into custody. Officers on scene provided first aid to the male until emergency medical services attended and he was taken to hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The male was treated and released from hospital.

No RCMP officers sustained injuries during the confrontation.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the circumstances of the officer-involved shooting.
