New boat launch being built on north shore of South Saskatchewan River

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Work is underway on a new boat launch that will allow additional access to the South Saskatchewan River for both the public and emergency crews.

When the decision was made to locate the new Fire Station Number 1 on the north shore of the river off Parkview Drive NE, part of the plan was to eventually take advantage of rapid access to the river for the Aquatic Rescue team.

Thanks to $360,000 in grant funding from the federal government, that is happening a little sooner than expected.

Fire Chief Brian Stauth says when minutes count, being able to get into the water next to the fire hall will be invaluable.

“Launching from Fire Station One in that situation is going to save us pretty close to 15 minutes of time” compared with having to haul their equipment to the current boat launch at Strathcona Park.

Stauth continues by saying “that’s really important from a life safety perspective and gives our firefighters the ability to be more effective on surface water rescue”.

The new launch will also offer access to non-motorized watercraft like kayaks and paddleboards, but Stauth doesn’t anticipate any conflict when it comes time for the Aquatic Rescue team to go to work.

Project manager Scott Woodside with the city says the current low level of the river will help with construction, but their design also incorporates the historical high water levels seen in the spring.

The North Shore Trail beneath the Maple Avenue bridge will be closed to public access while construction of the boat launch continues, with completion expected in mid-November.
