40 new cases in city, 1,609 in province

Province reports 24 new COVID-19 deaths in the past 24 hours

Hours before new public health measures are expected to be announced for Alberta, the province is reporting 24 COVID-19 deaths in Wednesday’s update.

There are 574 active cases of COVID-19 in Medicine Hat on Wednesday.

Medicine Hat has had 3,074 total cases – the 574 active, 2,455 recovered and there have been 45 deaths.

There are 40 new cases in the city in the past 24 hours and 49 new recoveries.

An AHS spokesperson told CHAT News on Monday that there are currently 79 COVID-19 positive inpatients in the South Zone with 20 of those in the ICU. There are 33 inpatients at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital with eight in the ICU.

MHRH has 10 ICU beds, but Medicine Hat physician Paul Parks has said they don’t have the people to man them all as they did in previous waves of the pandemic.

Chinook Regional Hospital has 34 with 12 in the ICU. Cardston Health Centre has eight inpatients, the Brooks Health Centre has three, and Pincher Creek Health Centre has one.

Among Hatters 12 and over, 74.8 per cent have received at least one dose of vaccine and 67.4 per cent are fully vaccinated.

64.9 per cent of all Hatters have received at least one dose of vaccine at the latest update and 58.5 per cent of Hatters are fully vaccinated.

There are 18,421 active cases in the province, up 156 from Tuesday, and 252,904 recovered cases in the province, up 1,429.

Alberta’s total cases from the start of the pandemic is 273,820.

There are 1,609 new cases in the province in the past 24 hours, and 429 more variant of concern cases have been identified.

There are now 877 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, 218 of which are in ICU, and 2,495 deaths.

The province completed 15,831 tests in the past 24 hours.

The positivity rate is about 10.2 per cent.

Alberta has administered 5,674,732 doses of vaccine at the latest update.

During a Monday conference call, chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said the province lifting all restrictions in July was the wrong move and set the trajectory for the fourth wave.

Among new cases today, 70.1 per cent are unvaccinated, 6.3 per cent are partially vaccinated and 22.9 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Among current hospitalizations, 74.3 per cent are unvaccinated, 3.7 per cent are partially vaccinated and 22 per cent are fully vaccinated.

The number of local outbreaks listed on AHS website has been rising across the city in the past weeks. Moduline and the Salvation Army Shelter have been added in recent days.

Medicine Hat (842.7), Cypress County (1,053.2) and the MD of Taber (930.4) are each in the top 15 in the province for active cases per 100,000 people.

Province-wide, 79.5 per cent of Albertans 12 years old and up have received at least one dose of vaccine and 71.4 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Among Alberta’s total population, 67.6 per cent have received at least one dose of vaccine and 60.7 per cent are fully vaccinated.

There are 1,805 active cases and 14,902 recovered in the South Zone. The death total in the zone is at 176.

The province-wide reproductive value for the week of Aug. 30-Sept. 5 is 1.12. It is 1.14 in Calgary Zone, 1.09 in Edmonton Zone and 1.12 in the rest of Alberta.

It’s updated every two weeks. At the last update from Aug. 16-22 the numbers were 1.19 in the province, 1.05 in Calgary Zone, 1.32 in Edmonton Zone and 1.22 in the rest of Alberta.

Cypress County has totaled 624 cases. There are 119 active cases, 504 recovered and one death. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 56.1 per cent, the two-dose rate is 49.8.

The County of Forty Mile has 193 total cases. There are 19 active cases, 171 recovered and there have been three deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 32.4 per cent, the two-dose rate is 28.9.

The MD of Taber has 837 total cases — 177 active cases, 653 recovered and there have been seven deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 39.5 per cent, the two-dose rate is 35.7.

Special Areas No. 2 has 150 total cases – 28 active cases, 121 recovered and there has been one death.

Brooks has 1,752 total cases — 108 active cases and 1,628 are recovered. Brooks has recorded 16 deaths.

The County of Newell has a total of 329 cases — 39 active cases, 286 recovered and there have been four deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 54.5 per cent, the two-dose rate is 48. The Newell numbers include the city of Brooks.

The County of Warner has 541 total cases. There are 49 active cases, 489 are recovered cases and there have been three deaths in the county. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 50 per cent, the two-dose rate is 43.8.

The City of Lethbridge has a total of 5,567 cases. There are 335 active cases, 5,188 recovered and there have been 44 deaths. Lethbridge County has 1,475 cases, 114 active cases, 1,347 recovered and there have been 14 deaths.

Not all the areas on the vaccination data map match the case count map.

The figures on alberta.ca are “up-to-date as of end of day Sept. 14, 2021.”

Saskatchewan has a total of 60,149 cases, 4,016 considered active. There are 55,504 recovered cases and there have been 629 COVID-19 deaths in the province.
