City, MHC bringing mobile COVID vaccine clinics this week

MEDICINE HAT, AB – As COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, ICU admissions and deaths continue to rise across the province, the City of Medicine Hat is continuing its efforts to boost vaccination rates in our community.

Merrick Brown, the city’s director of emergency management, says they’ve partnered with Medicine Hat College to bring a mobile vaccine clinic to the city for two days this week.

“We’re not in a good position. But … we can solve this problem as a community,” says Brown. “We just need to now take this into action and so we’re urging those individuals who are eligible to get a vaccine to go get your vaccine. We have a way out of this, and it’s a pretty simple way and that’s just get your vaccines.”

The clinics, hosted by a company called 19 to Zero, will be at Medicine Hat College from 1 to 4 p.m. on Friday and at the Family Leisure Centre from 10 am to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Anyone eligible to get a vaccine can attend either clinic.

The FLC clinic is only drop-in, while you can drop in at the college clinic or book an appointment.

Three weeks ago the city began an advertising campaign to encourage vaccinations among people aged 20-39.

Many college students fall in that group.

“That is still the age group that we need to communicate to,” says Brown. “Thankfully the 12-19 age group is actually having a considerable bump up in the vaccination rates locally just even over the past couple of weeks. In fact, the 12-19 group has since passed the 20-39 age group in vaccination rates. So we still really need to target that 20-39 age group.”

Brown says they’ve seen “decent uptake” since the ad campaign started in mid-August and this is an extension of that.

“We wanted to start with communication and now we’re taking it one step further and trying to get those needles in those arms.
