56 new cases in city, 1,339 in province

Surge in new COVID-19 cases pushes Medicine Hat over 2,500 total, 550 active

Medicine Hat has five more COVID-19 patients in hospital today and 28 more active cases.

There are 553 active cases of COVID-19 in Medicine Hat on Thursday.

Medicine Hat has had 2,521 total cases – the 553 active, 1,938 recovered and there have been 30 deaths.

There are 56 new cases in the city in the past 24 hours and 28 new recoveries.

An AHS spokesperson told CHAT News on Thursday that there are currently 61 COVID-19 positive inpatients in the South Zone with 13 of those in the ICU. There are 27 inpatients at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital with five in the ICU.

MHRH has 10 ICU beds, but Medicine Hat physician Paul Parks said on Wednesday they don’t have the people to man them all as they did in previous waves of the pandemic.

Chinook Regional Hospital has 24 with eight in the ICU. Cardston Health Centre has six inpatients, and Pincher Creek Health Centre and Crowsnest Pass Health Centre have two each.

Among Hatters 12 and over, 73 per cent have received at least one dose of vaccine and 66 per cent are fully vaccinated.

63.3 per cent of all Hatters have received at least one dose of vaccine at the latest update and 57.3 per cent of Hatters are fully vaccinated.

There are 12,868 active cases in the province, up 578 from Wednesday, and 240,328 recovered cases in the province, up 756.

Alberta’s total cases from the start of the pandemic is 255,584.

There are 1,339 new cases in the province in the past 24 hours, and 1,255 more variant of concern cases have been identified.

There are now 487 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, 114 of which are in ICU, and 2,388 deaths.

The province completed 12,416 tests in the past 24 hours.

The positivity rate is about 10.8 per cent.

Alberta has administered 5,574,762 doses of vaccine at the latest update.

Among new cases today, 69.4 per cent are unvaccinated, 7.8 per cent are partially vaccinated and 22.8 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Among current hospitalizations, 79.1 per cent are unvaccinated, 3.3 per cent are partially vaccinated and 17.7 per cent are fully vaccinated.

The number of local outbreaks listed on AHS website has been rising across the city in the past weeks.

Outbreaks are currently listed at two childcare facilities – Building Blocks Childcare in Medicine Hat and IF Cox Kindercare Program in Redcliff. An outbreak at Iron Horse Energy Services was added on Aug. 27.

Outbreaks have been declared at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and a handful of other health-care facilities.

The city has the fifth-highest cases rate per 100,000 people at 811.9. The ID of Wood Buffalo has the highest rate at 27,767.6. There are 163 active cases among the small population of just 587 people.

Province-wide, 78.2 per cent of Albertans 12 years old and up have received at least one dose of vaccine and 70 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Among Alberta’s total population, 66.5 per cent have received at least one dose of vaccine and 59.6 per cent are fully vaccinated.

There are 1,351 active cases and 13,635 recovered in the South Zone. The death total in the zone is at 150.

The province-wide reproductive value for the week of Aug. 16-22 is 1.19. It is 1.05 in Calgary Zone, 1.32 in Edmonton Zone and 1.22 in the rest of Alberta.

It’s updated every two weeks. At the last update from Aug. 2-8 the numbers were 1.25 province-wide, 1.09 in Calgary Zone, 1.41 in Edmonton Zone and 1.41 in the rest of Alberta.

Cypress County has totaled 512 cases. There are 94 active cases, 417 recovered and one death. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 54.6 per cent, the two-dose rate is 48.5. The county has the third-highest case rate per 100,000 people at 832.

The County of Forty Mile has 175 total cases. There are 14 active cases, 158 recovered and there have been three deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 31.6 per cent, the two-dose rate is 28.3.

The MD of Taber has 665 total cases — 73 active cases, 586 recovered and there have been six deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 38.5 per cent, the two-dose rate is 34.8.

Special Areas No. 2 has 121 total cases – eight active cases, 112 recovered and there has been one death.

Brooks has 1,648 total cases — 86 active cases and 1,547 are recovered. Brooks has recorded 15 deaths.

The County of Newell has a total of 290 cases — 26 active cases, 261 recovered and there have been three deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 53 per cent, the two-dose rate is 46.7. The Newell numbers include the city of Brooks.

The County of Warner has 493 total cases. There are 16 active cases, 474 are recovered cases and there have been three deaths in the county. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 48.6 per cent, the two-dose rate is 42.8.

The City of Lethbridge has a total of 5,238 cases. There are 208 active cases, 4,990 recovered and there have been 40 deaths. Lethbridge County has 1,366 cases, 63 active cases, 1,289 recovered and there have been 14 deaths.

Not all the areas on the vaccination data map match the case count map.

The figures on alberta.ca are “up-to-date as of end of day Sept. 1, 2021.”

Saskatchewan has a total of 54,953 cases, 2,466 considered active. There are 51,879 recovered cases and there have been 608 COVID-19 deaths in the province.
