MEDICINE HAT, AB – A fire ban in place for the city for nearly two months has been partially lifted.

The City of Medicine Hat says that effective immediately residents can use their legal backyard fire pit as per the conditions on their permit.

Fires in fire pits within Gas City Campground, Kiwanis Central Park, Kin Coulee Park, Lion’s Park and the main area at Echo Dale Regional Park will also be allowed.

However, the fire pits in Strathcona Island Park, and the fire pit at in the group camp area at the east end of Echo Dale Regional Park remain under the fire ban.

Use of charcoal barbecues is also now permitted.

Even with the recent cooler temperatures and rain, conditions still exist for fires to get out of control.

“Prairie grasses and brush on our hills, in coulees, and in natural open spaces remain quite dry, despite the rain and cooler weather,” said Fire Chief Brian Stauth. “Keep your fires small and have water on hand to extinguish the fire completely.”

The city reminds residents that all backyard fire pits in the city require a permit. Fire pit permits are available from Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services. To apply for a fire pit permit, visit the city website.

The fire ban has been in place since June 28.
