Hospitalizations continue to climb

Province records more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases, 62 in Medicine Hat

There are 533 active cases of COVID-19 in Medicine Hat on Wednesday and the province has topped 1,000 new daily cases for the first time since the end of the third wave.

Medicine Hat has had 2,200 total cases – the 533 active, 1,640 recovered and there have been 27 deaths.

There are 62 new cases in the city in the past 24 hours and 56 new recoveries.

An AHS spokesperson told CHAT News on Monday that AHS South Zone currently has 32 COVID-19 positive individuals in hospital, with 10 of those in the ICU. There are 20 positive inpatients at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, with seven of those in the ICU. MHRH has 10 beds for ICU patients.

Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge has six inpatients, with three of those in the ICU. The Cardston Health Centre has four inpatients, and both Big Country Hospital in Oyen and the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre have one inpatient each.

Among Hatters 12 and over, 72.2 per cent have received at least one dose of vaccine and 65.1 per cent are fully vaccinated.

62.7 per cent of all Hatters have received at least one dose of vaccine at the latest update and 56.5 per cent of Hatters are fully vaccinated.

There are 8,496 active cases in the province, up 565 from Tuesday, and 235,822 recovered cases in the province, up 510.

Alberta’s total cases from the start of the pandemic is 246,674.

There are 1,076 new cases in the province in the past 24 hours, and 721 more variant of concern cases have been identified. The last time the province had more than 1,000 new cases in one day was May 15.

There are now 284 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, 59 of which are in ICU, and 2,356 deaths.

The province completed 11,747 tests in the past 24 hours.

The positivity rate is about 9.2 per cent.

Alberta has administered 5,511,272 doses of vaccine at the latest update.

The number of local outbreaks listed on AHS website has been rising across the city in the past weeks.

Listed new this week are outbreaks at two childcare facilities – Building Blocks Childcare in Medicine Hat and IF Cox Kindercare Program in Redcliff.

Outbreaks have been declared at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and a handful of other health-care facilities.

The city has the second-highest cases rate per 100,000 people at 782.5. Banff is the highest at 825.2.

Province-wide, 77.5 per cent of Albertans 12 years old and up have received at least one dose of vaccine and 69 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Among Alberta’s total population, 65.9 per cent have received at least one dose of vaccine and 58.7 per cent are fully vaccinated.

There are 1,035 active cases and 13,072 recovered in the South Zone. The death total in the zone is at 144.

The province-wide reproductive value for the week of Aug. 16-22 is 1.19. It is 1.05 in Calgary Zone, 1.32 in Edmonton Zone and 1.22 in the rest of Alberta.

It’s updated every two weeks. At the last update from Aug. 2-8 the numbers were 1.25 province-wide, 1.09 in Calgary Zone, 1.41 in Edmonton Zone and 1.41 in the rest of Alberta.

Cypress County has totaled 448 cases. There are 82 active cases, 365 recovered and one death. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 53.8 per cent, the two-dose rate is 47.2. The county has the third-highest case rate per 100,000 people at 725.8.

The County of Forty Mile has 172 total cases. There are 13 active cases, 156 recovered and there have been three deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 31.2 per cent, the two-dose rate is 27.9.

The MD of Taber has 611 total cases — 33 active cases, 572 recovered and there have been six deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 38.2 per cent, the two-dose rate is 34.5.

Special Areas No. 2 has 116 total cases – eight active cases, 107 recovered and there has been one death.

Brooks has 1,591 total cases — 50 active cases and 1,526 are recovered. Brooks has recorded 15 deaths.

The County of Newell has a total of 276 cases — 19 active cases, 254 recovered and there have been three deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 52.5 per cent, the two-dose rate is 46. The Newell numbers include the city of Brooks.

The County of Warner has 480 total cases. There are eight active cases, 469 are recovered cases and there have been three deaths in the county. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 47.9 per cent, the two-dose rate is 42.2.

The City of Lethbridge has a total of 5,099 cases. There are 149 active cases, 4,910 recovered and there have been 40 deaths. Lethbridge County has 1,314 cases, 36 active cases, 1,264 recovered and there have been 14 deaths.

Not all the areas on the vaccination data map match the case count map.

The figures on alberta.ca are “up-to-date as of end of day Aug. 24, 2021.”

Saskatchewan has a total of 52,845 cases, 1,528 considered active. There are 50,725 recovered cases and there have been 592 COVID-19 deaths in the province.
