Vote on Oct. 18

Equalization, Daylight Saving Time questions finalized

Aug 12, 2021 | 10:09 AM

The wording of two provincial referendum questions that will be put to voters this fall has been finalized.

When voters go to the polls for the municipal election to vote for mayors, councillors, reeves and school trustees they will also vote federal equalization payments and Daylight Saving Time.

Both referendum questions allow for a ‘yes’ vote or a ‘no’ vote. The two questions are:

  • Should section 36(2) of the Constitution Act, 1982 – Parliament and the government of Canada’s commitment to the principle of making equalization payments – be removed from the constitution?
  • Do you want Alberta to adopt year-round Daylight Saving Time, which is summer hours, eliminating the need to change our clocks twice a year.

The municipal election takes place Oct. 18. The official announcement of the provincial referendum results will take place on Oct. 26.

Elections Alberta and Alberta Municipal Affairs are working with First Nation communities, Métis Settlements, Lloydminster, Summer Villages, Improvement Districts and Special Areas to provide voting opportunities for electors residing in these communities.

Premier Jason Kenney says the United Conservative government was elected on allowing Albertans to say yes to a fair deal by having a vote on equalization in the Canadian Constitution.

Removing equalization from the Constitution was one of 25 recommendations in the Fair Deal Panel Report that was released last year.
