TOKYO – Canada has beaten Sweden 3-2 on penalty kicks in the women’s soccer gold-medal game at the Tokyo Olympics. The game was tied 1-1 after extra time.

Sweden took the lead on a Stina Blackstenius goal 34 minutes in.

In the second half, Canadian captain Christine Sinclair was fouled, resulting in a penalty kick for Canada. Jessie Fleming scored and tied the game 1-1 at 67 minutes in.

Earlier, Canada’s men’s relay team has won bronze in the 4×100 at the Tokyo Games. Sprinter Andre De Grasse ran the anchor leg and crossed the finish line in a season-best time 37.70 seconds for the team. It’s the third medal of the Games and sixth Olympic medal overall for De Grasse.

Canada’s Moh Ahmed won silver with a gutsy effort in the men’s 5-thousand metres. The 30-year-old from St. Catharines, Ont. passed three runners on the final turn of the last lap to go from fifth to second. It’s Canada’s first Olympic medal in the event. Justyn Knight of Toronto finished seventh.

An impressive run in the women’s 1500m final for Gabriela DeBues Stafford ended with a fifth-place finish. The 25-year-old from Toronto challenged the front three runners into the final lap but began dropping with 200 metres to go. She finished six seconds behind race winner Faith Kipyegon of Kenya.

Two Canadian track cyclists are through to the round of 16 of the women’s sprint. Kelsey Mitchell and Lauriane Genest each won two heats to move onto the next round. The round of 16 and quarterfinals are tomorrow. The semifinals and final are Sunday.

Into the record books for American sprinter Allyson Felix. The 35-year-old finished third in the 400 metres to win her 10th Olympic medal. She becomes the most-decorated woman in the history of Olympic track.
