Rehabilitation work to start on four pedestrian bridges

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Work on the first of four pedestrian bridge facelifts in the city will begin later this week.

The Division Avenue Pedestrian Bridge in Riverside and below Crescent Heights will close for the upgrades on Thursday.

In a news release, the city says work will include welding and concrete repairs, new handrails, repainting and removing overgrown vegetation. The bridge is expected to reopen in mid-September, dependent upon weather and unforeseen circumstances.

Kensington Pedestrian Bridge over Ajax Coulee, also known as St. Mary’s Bridge, will be closed from about Aug. 3-23 for abutment repairs and painting.

Work will then move to the Altawana Pedestrian Bridge and Seventh Street Pedestrian Bridge as the schedule allows.

Residents are advised to follow the city’s social media accounts as the project may progress from one bridge to another with little notice.

“The pedestrian bridges provide vital continuity in Medicine Hat’s walking and cycling network, allowing patrons to safely cross difficult terrain like coulees and high-traffic roadways. This maintenance extends the life of the asset and improves aesthetic appearance,” says the city release.

The bridge work is being done under the COVID-19 Resilience funding stream under the existing Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).
