MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s been almost two months since the remains of 215 children were found on the grounds of a former residential school.

That discovery is what prompted one Indigenous woman to start a healing walk as a way of showing support for lives tragically lost.

Shayna Taypotat, 29, is walking over 1,555 kilometres from Saskatchewan to Kamloops and today she was in Medicine Hat.

Taypotat’s “A Walk To Healing For All” journey began on the Kahkewistahaw First Nation, about 165 kilometres east of Regina.

She’s not stopping until she reaches Kamloops, by walking eight hours a day for 45-50 straight days as part of her healing journey.

She’s the daughter of a residential school survivor and says she’s deeply impacted by the unmarked graves that have been and continue to be discovered.

Taypotat thinks even more children will be found.

“Every school has them,” Taypotat said. “They’ve only searched I think six and there’s 139 in Canada so every school has them for sure.”

To support Shayna Taypotat on her healing walk, a GoFundMe page can be found here.

She is also documenting the journey on her Facebook page.
