Redcliff bylaw busy with snake removals on properties

Jul 6, 2021 | 11:59 AM

REDCLIFF, AB – During the heat of the season, the Town of Redcliff receives several calls a week for snake removals on properties.

Community peace officer Barry Steier says removals vary per week.

Sometimes he removes one or two, while at times there can be up to 10 removals a week for both rattlesnakes and bull snakes.

He says popular nesting spots for snakes when it’s hot out are near outdoor steps, gardens, and backyards where there’s foliage.

“I suggest anyone going into their garden to do maintenance, first take a stick and just brush over the area, that way you’ll be able to see the movement. The snake will usually let you know that it’s there, especially if it’s a rattlesnake.”

He adds bull snakes are usually harmless, but they can be a little aggressive if they’re cornered.

Steier says bylaw then releases snakes into the prairie at an undisclosed safe location.

Call the Town of Redcliff if you need a snake removed.
