Toronto police officer killed in line of duty at city hall parking garage

Jul 2, 2021 | 9:56 AM

Toronto police say that one of their officers has been killed in the line of duty.

They say Const. Jeffrey Northrup was killed overnight in the parking garage at Toronto City Hall.

Police say the 31-year veteran of the service was intentionally struck by a vehicle after responding to a 911 call for a robbery in progress.

Another plainclothes officer was also injured and sent to hospital but she has since been released.

Interim police Chief James Ramer and Mayor John Tory made the announcement Friday morning outside city hall.

Ramer says one suspect has been arrested and police will provide an update when charges are laid.

Police say Northrup was killed after he and another officer confronted the suspect.

The Toronto Police Association says it’s attending to Northup’s wife and children and asks that the public respects their privacy.
