Medicine Hat police officer charged with assault involving youth

Jun 23, 2021 | 4:51 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A Medicine Hat police officer has been charged with one count of assault in connection to an off-duty incident on April 17.

In a statement, Medicine Hat Police Service says its investigation determined a youth knocked on the door of the officer’s residence at about 10 p.m. on the night in question and ran away. The officer exited his house and encountered another youth nearby, where the alleged altercation took place.

The results of the investigation were given to the provincial Crown Prosecution Service for review and it was recommended that the officer be charged with one count of assault.

Today, Const. Myles Steiger was charged and has been placed on administrative duties until further notice. He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 4.

Chief Mike Worden says he can’t speak to the exact details of the charge.

He says assault charges have different levels of seriousness and the prosecutor will take that into account when making this decision.

“If it meets what could potentially be a criminal threshold, that information is built into a file and then sent off to the Alberta Crowns prosecutor’s office. It’s assigned throughout the province so they’ll find a prosecutor that has some capacity. That prosecutor will review the materials and then make a decision and recommendation on charges or not,” Worden said.

Police say it’s anticipated that the internal disciplinary process under the Police Act will follow after the matter concludes in court. The process will determine whether any discipline, up to and including dismissal, is appropriate.

The Chair of the Medicine Hat Police Commission and the provincial Director of Law Enforcement were notified of the investigation.

MHPS says no further information on the investigation will be provided as the matter is now before the courts.

CHAT News first reported that an officer was under investigation earlier this week.
