Community Police Unit introduced in Brooks

BROOKS, AB – Police in Brooks are hopeful a new unit will improve relations between the police and community members.

Const. Sharon Peters, Cpl. Josh Argue and safe communities facilitator Kendra Sieben are the three members of the new Community Policing Unit within the Brooks RCMP Detachment.

The unit will focus on community engagement, education, crime prevention, presentations, public relations, or any other circumstances where it can be used as a resource.

“I am very excited to be in at the ground level of building our Community Policing Unit in Brooks. I look forward to building on the relationships I’ve had the opportunity to create over the past 13 years of living in and working in the City of Brooks,” said Argue in a news release. “Our community is so special for so many reasons and we can’t wait to get to work and be out there meeting everyone.”

The three members will work regular hours as opposed to the usual shift work schedule of police. They say this will give them the opportunity for additional engagement throughout the day, and to be entirely available to community members.

Mayor Barry Morishita says the city is excited about the unit and trusts “their leadership will continue to display that Brooks is a safe and thoughtful community.”

The Community Policing Unit formally began its duties on May 31.
