Medicine Hat Police respond to social media concerns about suspicious people in Ross Glen

Jun 7, 2021 | 1:06 PM

Medicine Hat, AB- The Medicine Hat Police Service has released a statement following concerns on social media about a suspicious group of people reported in and around the Ross Glen area.

According to reports on social media, the group was acting suspiciously by parking out front of houses for an extended time and taking pictures of license plates outside one particular home. Residents were also concerned because some of the individuals had out of province plates.

Police say that on Saturday June 5th, an initial report was received. An investigation determined that the individuals in question were canvassing door to door for a home security company based in Calgary.

According to the release, the company was contacted and it confirmed 14 people in the area conducting work. Medicine Hat Police are now working with the City to ensure the company is compliant with proper business licensing requirements.

Police say it’s important when interacting with door to door salespeople to always ask for identification if it is not readily visible. It’s also advised never to allow the person into your home or office if they don’t have or refuse to show their identification. A resident is under no obligation to allow a salesperson into the their home.

Anyone with concerns about the conduct of door-to-door salespeople, can report those concerns to the MHPS at 403-529-8481 or by contacting the Service Alberta’s Consumer Contact Centre at 1-877-427-4088 (toll-free in Alberta) or visit their website at www.servicealberta.ca.

To alleviate community concerns, the MHPS will have extra patrols in this area and remind residents to report any suspicious behaviour by calling 9-1-1 in an emergency or 403-529-8481 for non-emergencies.
