MEDICINE HAT, AB- Weather conditions this weekend have prompted the Medicine Hat Fire Service to urge residents to be extra careful around the river.

The Medicine Hat Fire Service said on their Facebook page that they responded to numerous calls on the river.

Platoon Chief Jason Labash said yesterday a parent notified the fire department after
three children floating down the river didn’t end up at Strathcona when they were expected. Labash said water flows and wind direction were having an impact.

” When they got on the river they weren’t traveling as fast, or as easy as they were probably hoping,” he said.

“It makes the river difficult to just simply float down,” he said, referring to the wind direction.

The children, a boy, and two girls were safely rescued. No one was hurt during that incident.

Meantime, this morning crews received a watercraft in distress call. Labash said a small boat took on some water and began to sink.

The person inside, according to Labash managed to swim to shore and was not hurt.

For both incidents, Labash stressed the importance of having a proper life jacket nearby, in order to keep safe.
