Jason Kenney and some cabinet members dining outside on the balcony

MLAs and Hatters have mixed reactions to Kenney’s dinner

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A photo taken of Premier Jason Kenney and other cabinet ministers dining outside Tuesday is frustrating Albertans.

The group is dining outside with bottles of alcohol on the table. No masks are being worn and there doesn’t appear to be any social distancing.

Each of Medicine Hat’s MLAs weighed in on the premier’s actions and have opposite thoughts.

Brooks-Medicine Hat’s Michaela Glasgo says she appreciates they met outside because that is compliant with the current restrictions.

“We have an obligation to Albertans to make sure we’re following the rules and I’m glad to see that they were,” the UCP member said.

Former UCP and current Independent Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Drew Barnes says the premier and cabinet members broke the rules, calling it arrogance and hypocrisy.

“I’ve been saying we’ve needed to be more open. We need rules that recognize that we need more social interaction and spiritual health and we have to have more cohorts have the opportunity to get together,” Barnes said. “The premier wouldn’t listen and here he is setting his own rules.”

Many Hatters are also frustrated by the photo, although they say they aren’t surprised.

“The way the government puts out one thing and then the next day it’s something different,” one woman said. “They give us a list of rules that we all try and follow and then they turn around and disregard everything that they’ve said.”

Another woman says Kenney’s actions speak louder than his words.

“I think it speaks volumes if he’s not even wearing a mask and there’s more going on than what they’re saying,” she said. “There’s a lot of hidden stuff happening.”

Dr. Deena Hinshaw refused to publicly comment on whether the premier and his dinner guests were in violation of public health rules.
