MHPS reminding residents to renew vehicle registration

May 29, 2021 | 1:58 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB- The Medicine Hat Police Service says they have noticed a trend in drivers on the road without updated vehicle registration.

Sgt. Gerald Sadlemeyer of the MHPS Traffic Unit said the reason for the trend is two-fold.

“Either we just happen to stop the right people at the right time, and it is luck of the draw or there’s an uptick with, ‘you know what the economy is rough right now, and registration for people which is $ 95.00 could be a hardship for them,” Sgt. Sadldemeyer said.

Last year, the province discontinued the use of vehicle registration stickers, leading some to forget, Saddlemeyer said. But, he said even without a sticker, police are able to determine registration status by running the license plate through their system.

Registrations expire on an assigned month which is based on thelast name, according to the province. A registration expiry date chart is available on the province’s website.

Drivers can renew their registration online, through the mail, or in person at any authorized registry agency.

The fine for driving without updated insurance is $324.00, according to Sgt. Sadlemeyer.
