Teepee glowing red for Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Anyone driving the highway through Medicine Hat late at night or in the early morning this month may have noticed the iconic Saamis Tepee is glowing red.

That red glow is in honour of May being Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month, which will end with World MS Day and a virtual MS Walk Day this Sunday.

After being caught off-guard by having to pivot to a virtual walk last year, the local Multiple Sclerosis Society was ready this year.

“We were able to encourage people and they knew what they were going to be doing by participating virtual so they’ve been able to be creative and figure out ways that they could create awareness, raise funds in their communities and/or in their networks and people have been surprisingly very, very successful,” said Beth Patton Collier, senior coordinator, development, for the Southeast Alberta Chapter.

The six teams and 30 walkers in Medicine Hat have raised more than $16,000.

“It’s amazing how those that can give have been able to give and those that can’t are showing their support in different ways by creating awareness,” she said. “It’s been really, really positive.”

The teepee was red every night except May 21, when it was orange for Early Childhood Educator Recognition Day.
