Alberta investing in supports for rural sexual violence survivors
The provincial government is expanding its frontline supports for survivors of sexual violence so that more survivors can access the critical services.
Alberta is investing $1.2 million to bring services such as counselling, crisis response and outreach supports to rural areas of the province where these supports are not currently available.
“With 43 per cent of Albertans experiencing at least one incident of sexual violence in their lifetime, along with growing numbers of survivors reaching out to sexual assault centres for support, additional funding from the Government of Alberta is now more important than ever,” says Deb Tomlinson, executive director of Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services, in a release.
Government says the increase will be distributed to all provincially-funded sexual assault centres based on a percentage of their annual grant allocations.
