12-week program

Mentorship program aims to keep girls in sports

MEDICINE HAT, AB – According to the Women’s Sports Foundation by age 14, girls drop out of sports at two times the rate of boys.

A new Girls Mentorship Program from the Medicine Hat Soccer Association aims to address that.

Medicine Hat College Rattlers soccer player Kaylei Hole helped organize the program and says she wants to get as many females as possible involved in sports.

“We’re hoping this kind of women and sport initiative will reach other sports as well,” said Hole. “I know it’s not just soccer who’s struggling with keeping female numbers. So we’re hoping if it’s all successful it will reach other sports as well.”

The 12-week program for girls ages 11 to 18 years old launches on June 5.

Every Saturday, athletes will participate in on-field training or in classroom sessions.

They will learn about female leadership, health and nutrition, injury prevention and balancing academics with athletics.

The program costs $25 and the deadline to register is June 2.
