MEDICINE HAT, AB – Grade 8 and 9 students at Alexandra Middle School will move to online learning for one week effective immediately.

In a statement, Medicine Hat Public School Division says that due to positive COVID-19 cases connected to AMS, more than half of the classroom teaching staff have been directed by Alberta Health Services to quarantine.

“Additionally, several staff have called in sick and are following AHS guidance with respect to isolation and testing. The result of so many absences among staff is that it becomes challenging to ensure that the systems and structures in a school function properly. MHPSD is concerned that staff (permanent and substitute) will be unable to maintain proper support for instruction and student safety and supervision,” reads the statement.

The division says that online learning will begin on April 30 and end on May 7. Grade 8 and 9 students will return to school on May 10. Teachers will provide academic instruction through Google classroom for the duration of the at-home online learning period, says the division.

Alexandra’s Grade 7 students will continue to attend school in person and bus service will be available, says the division, and all after school and extracurricular activities will remain cancelled until further notice.

The division has announced two positive cases of COVID-19 identified at the school.

Notre Dame Academy moved to temporary online learning this week.
