Pet boarding takes a hit with fewer people travelling

MEDICINE HAT, AB – COVID-19 has impacted countless industries over the last year.

Pet boarding has been one of those businesses taking a hit.

With fewer people travelling and more staying home, that means there are not as many people in need of a place to watch their dogs.

Taylor Kopperud is the co-manager at Pet Park Boarding Kennel.

They had to access government subsidies this last year to help them stay afloat and cover wages.

Pet Park has been collecting those subsidies since last April.

Kopperud says not many people are leaving their pets behind and they are under half capacity.

“It all depends on the time, but normally we have the capacity to hold around 45-50 dogs. And on our last long weekend where we’re normally full, I think we saw about 20 dogs so we’re running pretty low.”

She expects this summer to be slower as well.

Kopperud adds they still get daycare dogs, which has been helping business.
