Death of George Floyd

Derek Chauvin guilty of murder, manslaughter in death of George Floyd

Apr 20, 2021 | 3:13 PM

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been found guilty on all three charges he faced in the death of George Floyd.

Floyd died last May after Chauvin, a White officer, pinned his knee on the 46-year-old Black man’s neck for about 9 1/2 minutes in a case that triggered worldwide protests, violence and a furious re-examination of racism and policing in the U.S.

Chauvin was charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd’s May 25, 2020 death. Jurors had to reach a unanimous verdict on each count.

The jury deliberated over parts of two days in a city on edge against another outbreak of unrest like that that erupted last spring.

Before the verdict was read, the courthouse was ringed with concrete barriers and razor wire, and thousands of National Guard troops and law enforcement officers were brought in ahead of the verdict. Some businesses were boarded up with plywood.
