Live events with no COVID restrictions could return in Alberta this summer

Apr 16, 2021 | 3:30 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta’s chief medical officer of health has offered a potential timeline for when live events can once again be held in the province.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw wrote to industry stakeholders, responding to inquiries by numerous event organizers and groups that represent them.

“While we have signalled that with the advancement of vaccinations, we are anticipating the ability to remove restrictions to enable a more normal level of operations by the summer, we acknowledge that the economic challenges you are facing requires the inclusion of an audience as soon as possible.”

She gave the following proposed outline for when and in what capacity indoor and outdoor events might be able to be held:

  • April/early May: No in-person fans
  • Late May: 15% of fixed seating capacity to a maximum of 100 people outdoors
  • Late June: 50% of fixed seating capacity to a maximum of 500 people outdoors and 15% of fixed seating capacity to a maximum of 100 people indoors
  • Late July: Removal of capacity restrictions

This all, however, is contingent on how the pandemic progresses in the months ahead.

Hinshaw says they are continuing to take a close look at COVID-19 variants, hospitalizations, cases, and related factors “to determine the measures that would best address the current context.”

Final allowances for total attendance numbers will be confirmed as we get closer to those proposed dates.
