Country Thunder, Big Valley Jamboree festivals cancelled this year

A trio of popular country music festivals have been cancelled again in 2021.

Country Thunder has announced the Alberta and Saskatchewan editions will not take place this year. The Big Valley Jamboree festival in Camrose is run by the same people and that festival has also been cancelled.

“We understand that this is not the news that our fans in Alberta wanted to hear,” says Country Thunder Music and Big Valley Jamboree CEO Troy Vollhoffer in announcing the news. “But, as we have learned, and given these extenuating circumstances, the decision-making process is completely out of our hands.”

The releases about the cancellations say the decisions were made after discussions with public health officials and the provincial governments.

The uncertainty for large-scale, festival-size gatherings, effective COVID-19 protocols which would ensure fan safety, and ongoing border and travel restrictions are just a few major challenges for music festival events which typically take well over a year of planning, they say.

Country Thunder has set Aug. 19-21, 2022 for the Alberta festival and July 15-17, 2022 for Saskatchewan. Big Valley Jamboree is planning to return July 29-31, 2022

The Alberta Country Thunder festival was to take place Aug. 20-22 at Prairie Winds Park in Calgary. The Saskatchewan Country Thunder festival was scheduled for July 8-11 in Craven Valley. Big Valley Jamboree was set for July 29-Aug. 1 in Camrose.

Organizers say 2021 tickets will be automatically honoured for 2022.
