DENG MABIOUR

Brief court appearance for man charged with killing Red Deer doctor

Apr 14, 2021 | 2:59 PM

The man charged in the slaying of a Red Deer family doctor last summer made a brief court appearance Wednesday.

Deng Mabiour, 54, stands charged with first-degree murder in the Aug. 10, 2020 killing of Dr. Walter Reynolds at the Village Mall Walk-in Clinic. He also faces a count of assault on a police officer.

Mabiour has been in custody at the Calgary Remand Centre but was transferred to the Red Deer Remand Centre and appeared in person at the Red Deer Courthouse for today’s proceedings.

After initially being deemed fit to stand trial, court was told last month that Mabiour would be the subject of an Alberta Review Board hearing to assess him further. The result of that assessment was not addressed on Wednesday.

There was also no further update Wednesday after it was learned last month that Mabiour had attended the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary for a “serious medical condition.”

Mabiour maintained once again on Wednesday that he intends to represent himself at trial, which is slated for Nov. 22-Dec. 17 of this year.

Court heard Wednesday that the Crown will be filing an application preventing Mabiour from cross-examining any civilian witnesses during trial.

His next court appearance is slated for May 20.
